Oregon Midwives

Midwives in Oregon can be grouped into three basic types:

Certified Nurse Midwives: These midwives are nurses with hospital based midwifery training; most CNMs practice in clinics and hospitals.

Unlicensed Direct-Entry Midwives (DEMs) in Oregon can legally attend non-hospital births, but unlicensed midwives may not legally perform medical procedures such as suturing and administering IV fluids and medications.

Licensed midwives, called Licensed Direct-Entry Midwives (LDMs) also attend births outside of hospitals; in homes and at freestanding birth centers. LDMs must meet educational and experience requirements, pass a national exam, maintain continuing education and participate in peer review. They must follow practice standards and risk assessment protocols developed by the Oregon Board of Direct-Entry Midwifery, and renew their licenses annually.

Alma midwives are the third type of midwife, Oregon Licensed Direct-Entry Midwives. For more information and resources regarding midwifery in Oregon, check out our links page.
