Linda’s work at Alma Midwifery places a special focus on….. Your Almighty Pelvic Floor!
Each one of us has a powerful little “hammock” to support the internal structures of the pelvis including the bladder and rectum and in women, the uterus and vagina. For the most part, we rarely need to think about this part of our bodies and it’s intricate system of muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissue. Pregnancy, birth, stress, extra weight and normal aging all contribute to pelvic floor weakness and/or dysfunction. The National Institutes of Health reports that nearly 25% of women suffer from pelvic floor disorders- that’s 1 in 4 women!
Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction include the following:
Urgency or frequency with urination and urinary incontinence.
Pain or pressure in the vagina or rectum.
Constipation or difficulty passing stool.
Muscle spasms in the pelvic region.
Pain with intercourse.
Many people feel embarrassed to talk about these types of issues with their medical providers, though they are really quite common. Please don’t suffer needlessly. Help is available!
