PDX Parent Picks Top 5 for Best Hospital & Birth Center Since 2017!

Home, Birth Center, or Hospital?

Often this choice is up to the pregnant person and the other parent (if there is one), but sometimes your health, the baby’s health, your history and location of your home make one birth location more optimal. The beauty of Alma is that you can start care not knowing where you want to give birth. As your pregnancy unfolds, the best place is often revealed to you.

Having a baby at the Birth Center is often seen as the best of both worlds!

Families choose to birth at Alma instead of at home for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is the appeal of the postpartum pampering, sometimes it is an insurance billing choice, and sometimes it’s the fact that being at Alma is more appealing than their particular home situation. Often, parents of older children love the idea of having a “babymoon” at the birth center to enjoy some special alone time with their newborns.

Giving birth at home—the way it’s always been done.

Midwives have always known how to provide support through normal, healthy births. If we are allowed to trust and listen to our bodies, we will naturally seek out dark, safe, quiet places to give birth. While home birth is portrayed as new, trendy idea, it’s actually a very old one. Surrounded by people you love and trust, your body can release the hormones that allow you to open up and let your baby out.

Start Care at Alma Midwifery

We are thrilled that you are choosing Alma Midwifery as your preferred site to receive prenatal care and potentially give birth in our birth center. The first step is to give us a call 503-233-3001 to sign up for an open house tour, scheduled weekly. For more information on our tours, click here. Following that, (or if you have given birth with us before) we will register you for care and schedule your intake appointment. At this first visit, we will discuss your personal health history, to ensure that you are a good candidate for an out of hospital birth. If you are switching care from another site, please bring records from your previous provider to this appointment. After you have registered and we have determined you are an appropriate candidate, we can order an outside ultrasound which will be read by a radiologist, provide genetic testing, offer a PAP smear and review your nutrition and supplementation.

Community birth is a safe option for low-risk birthing people, together we will decide if you are a good candidate for a birth center, home or hospital birth. Our goal is to offer you high-quality, client-centered pregnancy care.

To ensure a smooth entry into starting prenatal care with us we ask you to have completed your intake paperwork, health history and financial agreements at least 48 hours before your intake appointment. If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment or need to reschedule please call and cancel at least 48 hours prior to avoid a charge.
